Goodbye, Sundays

Football – and particularly the Pittsburgh Steelers – is in my blood. I was born in Pittsburgh at the beginning of the Steelers’ Super Bowl dominance; my mother was pregnant with me when the team earned its first ring, and both she and my father were born and raised in the city. Even our cat, named Franco Harris, was a reflection of my family’s love for the team. Growing up, the Steelers were a religion, and worshipping them on Sunday was just as important – if not more so – than going to church. Continue reading

That Back-to-School Feeling

When I was growing up outside of Buffalo NY, the first day of school was the Wednesday after Labor Day. Unlike here in D.C., early September in Buffalo always had a bite in the air to let you know that autumn (and before long, snow) was right around the corner. I mean this in the best possible way – I can still smell the crisp air, feel the cool breeze, hear the first fallen leaves crackling under my shoes, and sense the excitement over the upcoming Buffalo Bills season. Friday Night: What a Difference 10 Years Makes

So given the fact that I am suffering from the plague, I sadly had to turn down an invitation to see the Buffalo Bills play the Washington Redskins tonight. Heartbreaking. Not only because I am SO ready for some football, but also because it is so rare that I actually do anything anymore on Friday nights.
