The More Things Change …

So here I am, four days into my new life as an independent contractor. Life is good! Or it will be … because right now, it is exactly the same as before.

I’m not saying that this reality is a surprise, or that my expectations for “Week 1” were not met – I fully anticipated that things would carry on as crazy as before, given the urgency of the project that I am currently working on. So while I have the luxury of working from home in my sweats, cat(s) curled up on my lap, I am as disorganized, scattered and busy as ever.

Patience is not my strong point. To (badly) paraphrase When Harry Met Sally … “when you realize how you want to spend the rest of your life, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” How very true! But as I look out at papers thrown everywhere, the remains of my old office in bags and boxes (or really, just strewn all over the floor), the dark circles that continue to be under my eyes and the piles of magazines and books I haven’t been able to pick up yet, all I can help thinking is, “I am ready for the rest of my life to start! Now please!” (or at least after my nap).

The interesting thing about this whole adventure is that my husband is on it as well – today is his last day at a company that he has worked at for 14 years. And wouldn’t you know, his first item of business at the new company is to finish out a project for the old one. Sound familiar?

So here we both are, in the beginning of major life changes … doing exactly the same thing as before. But at least the tunnel is a hell of a lot shorter, and that light is getting closer every day.

  1. Just breathe….everyday you get a little bit closer to finishing your project and will be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. You are amazing!!

Congratulations to your husband’s new job as well. What way to start 2011!!!

  2. I love this post… Maybe mainly because I relate to it… My sister left our mutual business January 1st, and everything feels so different, yet I’m doing the same thing every day! That, and my life is exactly like yours with piles of paper, magazines, everything, everywhere… One step at a time… Best of luck on your new endeavor!
